Port Augusta West Term 2 week 9
Principals' Report
As we come to the end of another busy and rewarding term, we reflect upon the achievements, events and memorable moments we have experienced. Term two has been filled with extra curricula activities, fundraising events, excursions; along with various events to look forward to for the remainder of the year.
I would like to take the opportunity to share my enthusiasm regarding our successful sports day last week. As a new person to the school, I was impressed with the effort and dedication from our House Captains. It was wonderful to see the sense of community, positive leadership of their peers and younger students which all contributes to our school's vibrant culture. The opening speeches which were given by the House Captains at the beginning of the day, certainly set the scene for the remainder of the day. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and the positive impact they have made on our school community. Thank you to all our House Captains for your hard work and dedication in the lead up to the event and on the actual day. I would also like to extend our thanks to Mr. Shanahan and the sports day committee, who spent a large amount of time preparing and ensuring that the event ran smoothly on the day. Thank you for your hard work, dedication and enthusiasm, which created an unforgettable experience for our students and community.
Our students have performed well as a cohort in the National Test of Literacy and Numeracy Skills (NAPLAN) for students in Years 3 and 5. We look forward to sharing these individual reports with families/care givers early next term.
I would like to announce that Jack Menzies has been appointed as Deputy Principal of Port Augusta West Primary School for the next three years, beginning 2025. We look forward to continuing to work alongside Jack and watch him build upon the great leadership work that he is already implementing. This appointment will provide the community with the reassurance of a stable leadership team moving forward. Congratulations to Jack.
We would like to thank Alice Cornhill for her hard work and dedication in the Reception class for the first half of this year. Her kind and compassionate nature, coupled with her understanding of the Early years curriculum, has set up our newest learners for success. We wish Alice all the very best in her new adventure of becoming a mother and we can't wait to hear your news and meet baby Cornhill. We also look forward to the possibility of working with Alice again in the future. I am pleased to announce and welcome Kate George and Tiarna Rigden to the Reception class for terms 3 and 4. Kate and Tiarna will be sharing the class on a part time basis. I am confident that with Kate's wealth of knowledge and experience and Tiarna's fresh enthusiasm, the Reception class will continue to thrive in their first year of school.
We have 30 students representing Port Augusta West Primary School on the Children's University Camp next week. The group will attend a 2-night camp at the Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Zoo. We would like to extend our gratitude to the Children’s University for allowing our students this incredible opportunity. I would also like to thank the staff and parents who are attending the camp to support our students.
Reports will be distributed on Friday next week. It has been pleasing to read about the continual growth of our students in a range of subject areas. Please review the written report and feel free to contact class teachers for any clarifications.
I am pleased to share that we have been fortunate enough to secure a lunch order option, beginning on Tuesday of week one next term. Lunch orders will be available from Monday-Friday each week. Thank you to the wonderful staff at Flinders View Primary School who have provided us with a lovely menu to order from (pictured below). We will trial this process for term 3 and re-evaluate. The lunch orders will need to be ordered using the ‘Spriggy For Schools’ app. Orders must be placed by 9am that day via the app only – this is the only way to order. We are just finalising the Spriggy App with classes and will send home more information early next week with how to download. Lunch orders will be distributed at school at 10:40am each day.
*A reminder that the lunch orders will not begin until Tuesday of week one, due to a Student Free Day at FVPS*
A reminder that students will be dismissed next Friday at 2:10pm. I would like to wish you all a safe and happy end of term break.

NAIDOC WEEK
We will be celebrating NAIDOC week with some activities next week. The NAIDOC committee have been busy planning and organising some fun and engaging activities for our students to participate in.
Sports day
Well 2024 Sports Day is done and dusted.
The weather was glorious for a Winter's Day in Port Augusta. Four enigmatic teams of young people embarked Rotary Oval to determine what team would be crowned Sports Day Champion. Not everyone was fortunate to receive a medal or ribbon but being a participant, trying your best, cheering the loudest, wearing something groovy and demonstrating fairness should be each student's benchmark. A day such as Sports day requires a lot of work behind the scenes. I would like to thank such an awesome staff who supported me on the day. The Parent Club's delicious food, your value as a group is priceless and thanks for helping our school to become amazing. To all the young speakers who spoke in the opening speech, especially a very nervous Indy Knibbs who absolutely nailed the Acknowledgement of Country.
Thank you to a very generous Anthony Ruffles for the line marking, Port Augusta City Council for allowing us to have it at Rotary Park, Flinders View Primary School for providing an extra High Jump mat and Sports Power Port Augusta for the trophies. I wish to finally thank all the students for their tireless commitment leading up to Sport's Day and working towards becoming the best version of themselves. I am very proud of all our students, confident they will be strong leaders and sporting role models for our community. I look forward to the District Sport's Day in term 3, where our high achieving students will represent our school. I am very humble and proud to be part of your child's success here at Port Augusta West Primary School.
House winners for 2024 - There was a theme of Back to Back. Bond 4 in a row, who would ever thought so? Bond were very confident, and what a juggernaut team! 5 in a row next year? I am sure Mildred, Sanderson and Hartley will have a strong say in this. The ever so vocal and switched on Hartley took out the War Cry who managed to go Back-to-Back - Super Impressive and Military Like. Health Hustle Hustlers Mildred were again in sync grooving to the Macarena with both flair and enthusiasm. Sanderson were the standout organised group, showing strength, speed and precision to notch up two in a row in the team games. Surely the ultimate accolade in 2025 is definitely in their reach.
Have a wonderful Holiday,
Kind regards Setio

Lily: I liked Grug going fishing.
Ryder: I liked how the big fish jump out of the water and get Grug.
SAPSASA
Congratulations to Maddison Corbell and Luca Grantham who were selected to represent the Northern team in SAPSASA Netball. Twenty girls from across the Northern district competed in the Country Netball carnival on Monday the 24th until Wednesday the 26th of June. The carnival was held at the Netball SA stadium in Keswick.
Northern had a Division 2 and a Division 4 team participating in the carnival. Overall, both teams had some very successful results throughout the three days. Maddison competed in the Div 2 competition and the team finished in first position overall and were undefeated for the carnival. Luca competed in the Div 4 competition and her team finished in second place, only losing one game by two goals. The overall scores were calculated over the course of the three days and there were no finals. Some of the regions that were involved were Murraylands, Gawler, Western Eyre Peninsula, North Eastern, Northern Yorke Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, Pirie and Whyalla. There were some amazing skills on show throughout the carnival and the girls were able to play in various positions and improve as a team throughout the three days.
It was a fantastic effort by all the girls and the way they conducted themselves throughout the carnival is to be commended. Well done and congratulations to Maddison, Luca and the Northern Netball teams on their success. Thanks to the families for supporting their girls in the SAPSASA experience and assisting with scoring. I would also like to thank Jayde Finlay, Kaitlyn Roberts and Jenna Glamuzina for umpiring during the carnival.

NORTHERN SAPSASA COACH
Local SAPSASA Reverse Carnival Boys Netball, Girls Football
Friday June 14th we sent a girls football team and one boys netball team for the SAPSASA Reverse Carnival.
In Week 7 the boys went to Central Oval for SAPSASA Netball. It was really fun and everyone had a good time. We played some hard fought games but managed to go through the carnival undefeated, with some very speedy skills and great shooting. We faced Flinders View in the Grand Final and won. Overall our favourite part of Netball was meeting all our friends from other schools, and of course, winning. Thank you to Simone for coaching and Narelle for umpiring for us.
Flynn and Joe
A couple of weeks ago PAWPS participated in the reverse carnival where girls played footy and boys played netball. Our team was coached by Mr Shanahan and we got some tips from Narrell as well. We played five games and won four of them unfortunately we lost the grand final by quite a lot but we still had a great time and Our team would like to that all of the teachers and staff that coached us that Friday.
